Old Gods for Mortal Coil

Talking about sitting around a table and talking.

Preparing for my Old Gods game this Friday, I did some research for the bartender. I wanted a relatively obscure god of alcohol, not Bacchus or Dionysus. Still, I wanted the guy running the bar to be connected to drink in some way, and via the awesome Encyclopedia Mythica, I found this guy:

Sesmu
The Egyptian god of oil and wine pressing.

That's all they say about him, and with an article that small, I figure he's obscure enough. I've never heard of him, after all. So, Sesmu it is.

Then, after a little additional research, I found some additional facts that make me want to use him even more. Not only is he the god of wine, thanks to the wine press, but he is also the god of executions, because of the resemblance of wine to blood, and the fact that beheadings take place on a block reminiscent of a wine press.

A very interesting back story for a guy who runs a seedy bar these days. I'm looking forward to seeing how this game world turns out.

That sounds awesome! For a passable tale of beer and the supernatural, read Tim Power's The Drawing of the Dark.

What sort of seedy bar in Philadelphia serves wine (except the one with dead gods in it)?

Here's some I saw and liked, because female bartenders rock!

Ninkasi - Sumerian Goddess of Intoxicating drink
Tenenit - Egyptian Goddess of Beer

...and a barback

Biersal - Kobold from German folklore who lives in the cellar. He will clean all jugs and bottles as long as he receives his own jug of beer daily for his trouble.

Cool stuff. I am definitely using the biersal. :tu:

You're playing this on Friday? You best write up a goddamn report. And run it again at Recess!

Good to hear it.

I'm already in love with the old god Egyptian bartender and Biersal. I cannot wait to read about the rest of the game.

Maybe you can use Ninkasi and Tenenit as waitresses.
