King's Blood by Daniel Abraham

Love in a little plastic bag with cardboard backing + grind-core, math-rock, polka, musical parody,

Ok, I found it with TanRu's help. This is Magister Imaniel, the senior banker in The Dragon's Path:

“Cithrin?” he said. “Why won’t I lend money to the prince?”
“Because if he doesn’t want to pay you back, you can’t make him.”
Magister Imaniel shrugged at Cam. “You see? The girl knows. It’s bank policy never to lend to people who consider it beneath their dignity to repay.

Komme Medean's policy not to lend to nobles comes up again in The King's Blood. This was a real-world, historical phenomenon. Absolute monarchs were terrible debtors. Historian Niall Ferguson puts it this way in The Ascent of Money:

Investors in royal debt had to be wary. Whereas towns, with their oligarchical forms of rule and locally held debts, had incentives not to default, the same was not true of absolute rulers. As we saw in Chapter I, the Spanish crown became a serial defaulter in the late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, wholly or partially suspending payments to creditors in 1557, 1560, 1575, 1596, 1607, 1627, 1647, 1652 and 1662.

The British monarchy, by contrast, accepted constitutional limits on its power. The King's power was balanced by Parliament, whose members owned at least some of its debt, and wouldn't let it default. The British Crown was then able to borrow money at much better rates.

Done! I win! Just kidding, I wish I could have savored this one for longer. A great read. It's tighter and faster than the first one, with excellent pacing and plotting. It looks like Abraham is still getting better with each book. I do miss the financial machinations of the first one, though, and there's one plot point that puzzles me:

When Yardem Hane kicks out Marcus Wester, why does he have him tied up instead of killing him? That seems like Hane is begging for Wester to come back and kill him. And how does Master Kit know to show up at the makeshift prison? Did Kit pay or convince Hane to usurp Wester? It seems like a natural conclusion, so you'd think the question would have occurred to Wester, but it doesn't seem like it has. If it really was Kit's plot, is Marcus that dense or is Kit using his powers of suggestion?

Yet another book to add to my reading list it seems. When I did I noticed Amazon has another Joe Abercrombie book called "Red Country" listed as an upcoming release. So, one book leads to another yet again. :)

Dude, yes! That will be Abercrombie's fantasy "western," set in the same world as his previous works.

One loose end: What happened to Alan Klin after the insurrection? I have to assume that he's still in jail, but if so why didn't Palliako mete out his judgment before dealing with small fry like Clara and Barriath Kalliam?

I'm still reading, but as I went back to The Dragon's Path to refresh my memory of some stuff, I came across this awesome quote from King Simeon (speaking to Dawson) which is much more meaningful now:

The dragons didn't fall because there was a war. There was a war because there wasn't a leader. A family needs a father, and a kingdom needs a king. It is your duty to lead, and if you fail in that, the day will come when they follow someone else. Then we will be on the dragon's path.

I didn't even think of that. Duh. Yes, that makes a lot of sense.

Now, the long wait.

At least Caliban's War comes out this month. He is a writing machine! I hope he keeps this pace up for all 5 books of this series, and however many in the expanse!
