NERD NYC SHORT FICTION ANTHOLOGY IDEA

Love in a little plastic bag with cardboard backing + grind-core, math-rock, polka, musical parody,

Postby flojin on Tue Jan 24, 2012 9:12 am

My nerds,
Saif and I were batting around the idea of a bunch of us getting together to contribute short stories to an ebook that we would then publish. It would be a "From The Nerds At NerdNYC: _______"

The blank would be the theme of the anthology. Maybe one of the illustrator nerds could do a cover, and someone else could lay it out.

If the thing ever actually made money, we would give half the money to nerdnyc, and the other half would be split equally among the authors.

I thought we could use this thread to gauge interest, and maybe pick a theme. I'm proposing the following themes just to get things started. If you have any other theme ideas you like, just post them, and then we'll run a poll for voting. Count me and Saif in as authors, and let us know if you want to contribute too. Each story would be around 5-9K words roughly. Saif would help edit.

Possible theme ideas? Post apocalyptic New York. Zombie New York. New York City as a feudal state. New York City occupied by an alien army. NYC in 25 years.

OK, let 'er rip! Tell me what you think!

Wow, this is an AWESOME idea! I'd be interested in contributing. Are you limiting to short story? What about nerd-related poetry or songs or anything else? Not that I'd necessarily do that, but I might be inspired, I never know.

I would rather not limit it to anything. But it will be published as an ebook format, so music might not be possible. I'm excited to see what you and Eppy and Saif contribute!

Do you guys have any themes you'd like to see, or did any of my suggestions grab you? I think the book should have a theme of some sort to help get readers interested.

I'm cool with your themes. In particular, I like feudal state NYC and alien occupation NYC. I'm less interested in zombie NYC because I'm not a fan of the current zombie trend, but I could definitely use it as an excuse to write to the genre's roots. And NYC in 25 years will be particularly challenging to me because I'm not much of a futurist, but I could always us that to make fun of Apple.

So I guess I'm saying they all work for me.

I like alien occupation NYC too!

You're right, zombie's have been done to death...no pun intended.

Let's see who else is interested and what they like in terms of themes. Please feel free to PM any of our nerds who you think might want to participate in this. Let's get a nice group together and write some stuff!

I want in!!!

Some fun ideas for themes:

Sci-fi NY - stories that all take place in NY but of all genres (aliens, zombies, vampires, etc)
Alternate reality NY (stories that take place in a NY of another dimension!)
To the gameless I bring games. To the funless I bring fun. Those who welcome these gifts may live, but I will visit naught but death and eternal damnation on those who refuse them!

I would love to be a part of this, just to have that motivation again, the desire to write and bring something in. It'll either be super dark or super silly no matter what I write so...prepare. :)

I'm down with the Sci-Fi NYC, but wouldn't mind some alt history NYC, and hey if you want the Twilight crowd to love it, Urban Fantasy NYC.

I'll add this to the mix:

Recently attended a short story reading at Bar 82, and wondered, why don't we do this with nerdish short stories?

Keeping the readings under 12 minutes, we could rent the space very affordably for an hour or two.
