The players in the Sunday night D&D Red Box game--Boredoom, Chris, Shawn, Wei Yi, and Dave--managed to survive TPK Tower, literally against all odds.
My attitude in GM'ing is to always abide by the dice, no fudging, no cheating. And when the session began, I was sweating a little because parts of the dungeon proved to be very deadly in playtest.
Incredibly, the players managed to avoid the most dangerous parts of the dungeon, and got pretty lucky on wandering monster rolls. But all the luck in the world wouldn't have mattered if the players were foolish or lost focus. They were sorely tempted to spring a proto-lich from its imprisonment, but managed to avoid doing so until the last moment. But they were mostly level-headed, pragmatic, and focused. They survived long enough to kill the evil wizard, and hopefully managed to flee before the Dragon or the Proto-Lich hunted them down...
(The only fudging I used, was that a monster set off an alarm with its dying breath, summoning the magicians, creating a climax. The timing was very fortuitous!)
Anyway, good play and good times. Thanks, players!
