LAST RECESS I noticed some dads with their sons, playing some war game. I really want to know if there will be anything like that this time or something family friendly. I am trying to get at least my son and maybe my wife in on recess.

Ha! That was my Warhammer game. It didn't plan it as family entertainment, but it worked out well. I'm not bringing Warhammer this time, but there are usually tables with lighter board games that are suitable for kids. How old is your son?

Tavis' son is running a D&D 4E game which should be exciting.

Here is a sample of our all ages games:

- Dungeons & Dragons 4E
- Blood Bowl: Team Manager + Invasion from Outer Space: The Martian Game
- Project NinjaPandaTaco + Legend of Drizzt!
- Learn How To Paint Minatures
- Adventurer Conqueror King (like Old School D&D)
- Savage Worlds (My Little Pony)
- Sesame Street RPG
- Marvel Super Heroes (FASERIP version)
- Carcassone/Ticket To Ride/Settlers of Catan
- Lady Blackbird (like steampunk starwars)
- The Muppets RPG!
- Everything Is Dolphins
- Dungeons & Dragons - Original RedBox

- FATE RPG: My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic

And more!

I am going to try to talk my wife into going to Carcassone/Ticket To Ride/Settlers of Catan. Our son, who is nine, has no love for TTR. He enjoyed brickquest when we playtested at foner's house, so perhaps that.

I'm running a not-for-kids RPG. I'd like to run a kid-friendly one next time.

Tavis's son played in my Night's Black Agents game when I ran it at Anonycon. You'd have to ask Tavis about his perspective, but from my end it went really well. I toned down the adult content, he drew pictures of the weapons he'd requisition via the Preparedness skill, and everyone ended up having fun. I know he ran a game there as well, and by all accounts it was a lot of fun. Lord knows I know a lot of gamers older than 10 years old who wouldn't have done as good a job.

Speaking only for my two RPGs, the Ashen Stars game is great for new players but not for kids, and the Night's Black Agents games is great for new players and okay for kids.

I think Tavis is running the Adventurer Conqueror King game; if so, try to get into it with your son. If there's anyone who knows how to GM a great game for kids, it is he.

Wow I am new here after just getting informed about the site from a potential recruit and first thing I learn about is Recess?

I am very pleased.

Then I come and start investigating after applying to run games and I see Piratecat?

I am impressed.

Is this the same Piratecat from EN World? I have long been a fan if so pal.

Anyway, about me since this is my inrto / advertising / recess post:

Hi I am Alex! Front man, GM and all around Pain in the @%##%& guy from Bad Wrong Fun.

I am a rpg fanatic. I started playing in the early 80ies, played every version of D&D, the old Marvel Superheroes game, CoC, Dresden Files and Mouseguard.

I mostly GM these days as I get a kick out of doing neat stuff and amazing people with my half baked schemes.

I just moved back to NYC 3 months ago now (wow time flies) and was looking to run a group through my heartbreaker version of D&D which incorporates all the good from each edition minus all the crap.

Friends of mine instead introduced me to RuneQuest and I was hooked. I saw how a system that doesn’t rely on levels could have a high degree of synergy with a West Marches open sandbox style of play. Then I thought about Dawn of Worlds which I haven’t used in awhile and realized I was on to something. When I started advertising my “cool” idea people then turned me on to Microscope. I instantly saw synergy there again.

So now I am recruiting for a campaign that will involve 20 players. Yes I know I said 20 - pray for me. Anyhow I have also applied to host games at Recess as it will be a great recruiting tool and I will get to demo some of the neat stuff about my upcoming game.I am going to to also speak to some people about showing off some bits and pieces of a game that will be released in 2012.

If that all flies ... like I hope it should then I will see you guys at Recess!

Hi again gang,

It looks like I was late to the party. I have been placed on supernumerary-standby-reserve to be notified in case of emergency, boredom, bad ideas, or some other last resort. Understandable I suppose but crushing to my rather frail ego. I may not be attending as I already had other plans that I was hoping to fold into the whole shebang, well shall see. I have agreed to leave myself open for the Sunday slot if it comes available, but proceed with my Saturday scheming unmolested.

I hope that works itself out! I might have to pass and wait till the next Recess to meet you P.C.

Regards,
Alex

Hi everybody,

My wife and I are new to nerdNYC and to gaming in general. We are interested in attending the recess as there are a couple of boardgames being played that we'd like to try. Is Recess kind to new players or should it be for more experienced players only? Also, what is the likelihood that the games we want to play are filled up before we are able to join? I'm not exactly sure how the sign-up process works...

Thanks for the help.

Recess attendees are exceptionally kind to new people. As to getting into the game of choice, it is hard to say. When you show up, you draw a lottery ticket for your number in line to sign up. Even a high number can still get what you want if it doesn't turn out to be a game that draws big for some reason. Be sure to mention at the table that you are planning to sign up together, because they can give you one ticket for both of you. Actually, I can only assume this is still true. It happened last Recess, and seemed to work well so I doubt it would be stopped.
