[Recess October 2011] LotFP: The Siege of Skaarsport

NerdNYC's quarterly gaming event

Postby dorje on Fri Oct 07, 2011 6:00 pm

Here's a bit of a preview.

I should also mention that since I first submitted this, the adventure has taken a bit of a change. It is less 'defend the castle' as it is an urban crawl during an invasion of undead. But it is also what you make of it. Your goal could be survival, eradication of the evil menace, founding a new order with yourselves at the top or a march into the bowels of hell--literally.

-------

Welcome to Siege of Skaarsport
System: Lamentations of the Flame Princess Weird Fantasy Role Playing

This game will be a largely improvised adventure played using a ruleset that is based on TSR’s Dungeons and Dragons Basic and Expert Rules. If you are familiar with the ‘red box’ rules, you should feel at home here. If not, you don’t need to worry. This is an extremely simple game.

The rules are designed for play in low-magic settings. You will not find a ‘magic shop’ in town with potions of healing, you will not find a temple to resurrect you and you will not stumble upon a sword +1 anywhere. Most people in this world have never seen magic and almost none would want to.

Magic use is persecuted in this part of the world. I might make much of it in the setting and behavior of the NPC’s, especially the tension between Clerics and Mages. You should NOT take this as an invitation to go after one another. The war has put more distance between all of you and everyone else than between one another.

The city where this takes place is called Skaarsport. It is only vaguely defined at the start of the game. There are a few landmarks, a general shape and a name. Much of the rest will be created on the spot using Vornheim: the Complete City Kit. This shouldn’t bog us down, as Vornheim is designed to not bog us down.

Here are some important differences between TSR’s Basic D&D and LOTFP:

No Thieves. Thieves are replaced by Specialists and they function somewhat differently. All Skill rolls are made on a d6. You can choose which abilities you want to add points to before we begin, so you could make a stealthy backstabber or an acrobatic climber.

Fighters have a unique role. Only fighters ever get better at combat as they level. While you will not likely level in this adventure, you should understand that in this game, fighters are not just meatshields, but are actually a destructive force to be reckoned with. A fifth level fighter adds 6 to all attack rolls before other bonuses are added. All other classes add 1.

Cast Different. Spells are in some cases very different. Please refer to the spell books I have printed out. You will not see fireball or any sort of resurrection spell. If you want to replace a spell in your spell book, I will allow you to replace two spells within the first 30 minutes of play.

Skillful Means. There are a few skills, such as searching for doors, climbing, stealth. They are all listed on the left of your sheet. Everyone has at LEAST a one in six chance to do anything. If you have more pips filled in, your chances are better. If all six are in you always succeed unless you roll a six and then another six.

Wizards with Swords? Sure! Anyone can use any weapon they can hold. Halflings cannot hold great weapons. That’s the only restriction. What keeps mages from wearing plate? Heavy encumbrance prevents mages from casting spells (but not elves).

Elves are not considered even partly human. So any spell that charms a person will not work, but holy water hurts them!

Turn Undead is a Spell, Not an Ability. That's the LOTFP way. For our purposes, a house rule: Undead? What Undead? Undead are not even known to exist outside old tales. So there is no such spell. There are also no spells that animate the dead.

Leather for Everyone! Everyone has at least leather armor. It counts as regular cloths for encumbrance purposes.

Encumbrance is simple. It’s based on the armor you wear and how many items total you carry. Tiny things, clothes, leather armor, etc. do not count. Spears, polearms, two handed swords etc. count as two items. Since this is so simple, and you would otherwise want to carry around 200 crossbow bolts, we will use it. You will love it!

So there you are. Morning session. I can't wait.

I just want to thank my five players: Mysterioso, DeirdreZ, Ross, Adrian and Wyeth!

You guys went so completely off the charts and made me WORK to keep things going. I really feel like I was stretched as a GM and had a great time as well. I hope to sit at the table with all of you again many times!

I'll post a play report on my blog at some point (see the link in my sig). After a few more playtests, I hope to put this out there as a pdf. Please PM me your real names if you'd like to be thanked in it.

Thank you so much for running! This was officially my first time playing any Basic/OD&D style game (also my first Recess) and it was a blast. Thanks also to the other players for the great table rapport. Viva RPG!

Ridiculously fun! Any game wherein C.H.U.D. can be mentioned is great. Thanks for running this and thanks for handholding me through my first D&D game ever.
