[Minecraft] NERDWORLD: A New Beginning?

from Q*Bert to Gamecube.

Postby stormsweeper on Sun Sep 11, 2011 3:05 pm

As discussed in the mega thread, there's a ton of new stuff coming in the next two updates, but our large world will not get most of it unless we push out even further. There was some talk of starting over, but instead I have proposed that the ops run out to a new faraway zone, and we make that the new spawn point, either by editing the map or simply connecting it to the old one and putting some beds there.

1.8 is supposed to hit tomorrow morning, so we could do this sometime next week. There's more changes in 1.9, but that does not yet have a release date. I'm guessing it will be at least a couple weeks, probably more like four. Do we want to restart with 1.8, or wait for 1.9?

The process as I see it:

- We hold off updating to 1.8 until ready
- I lock out non-ops
- Iskander does the drudge work of finding the new spawn area and doing and prep there (connecting it to the old area can be done later)
- I edit the map to move the spawn point, then move the players to that location
- I re-open the server to non-ops

Any comments or concerns on the restart?

As to hosting, I'm looking into some other options. The update may help out a great deal with the new lighting system, but if there is a resurgence of interest and the lag on the Amazon servers are too high, we could go for non-free hosting. I'm thinking I would collect $20 from whoever wants to contribute and see how far that takes us.

I noticed that we have two long stretches of terrain spanning outward from the main land. If that land isn't really being used, and we can trim it off from the world we can use those coords as new land and save on having too much stuff in the world and too much distance between lands.

EDIT: Actually, would one mod be out of the question? A mod that let's people teleport between the old coordinate spawn and the new spawn. That would save on the need to build rail to it.

I am excited about this plan. I am looking forward to 1.8 and if the nerd server offers easy access (the easier the better) to all the new 1.8 goodness, that would be sweet!

Thanks Stormy and Iskander for all your work making the nerd server awesome.

There's stuff built out on one of those spurs at least, not sure if anything permanent on the other ( it was someones lapis mine). In any case we're probably going to be moving 1k+ blocks from the edge of the current map and the map is infinite for all practical purposes.

In general I'm anti-modding. Its just more stuff to keep track of and get in the wat of updates. Iskander has already volunteered to do the work of connecting up the new area by nether, which should be reasonably fast work in creative mode.

It's not clear when the 1.9 update is due to drop, but it is certain that it will have the same effect on terrain as 1.8: i.e. there will be new stuff that we have to travel to fresh chunks of novel terrain to see.

Using the sun as a compass reference (rising in the east), the two long exploratory spurs are North and South (ish). I suggest we go East for 1.8, and West for 1.9 (or vice versa. I rather like the idea of having progressively more ancient areas in NerdWorld, joined by passages through Hell. We'll all get to be Nightcrawler with railways.

That works for me! I say west for 1.8, east for 1.9 to have the sun rising / newest land dynamic.

once I get a computer set up, I would not mind following Dracura around so I'm not bored every single Saturday afternoon.
