R.I.P. Jeffrey Catherine Jones

Love in a little plastic bag with cardboard backing + grind-core, math-rock, polka, musical parody,

A legend passes. Jones was one of the reasons i originally followed comics, and a monumental fantasy illustrator.

Renowned artist Jeffrey Catherine Jones, whose work is best known from the late 1960s through 2000s, has passed away. Jones struggled with inner personal demons and ultimately underwent sex reassignment surgery in the late 1990’s. Her talent was never in question, and she provided hundreds of covers for different types of books, as well as venturing into fine art and sculpture. The great Frank Frazetta considered Jones "the greatest living painter”.

His "I'm Age" strip in HeAvy Metal was the first thing I'd read in that mag each month. And his covers were amazing. Or maybe I should say "her covers," though most of the Jones work I knew was from before the transition. Still, whatever the pronoun, a great artist and someone whose work I've admired for over thirty years.

^this.

"I'm Age" was my first experience... or maybe the Leiber books.

I grew up on "Jeff," so i'm sticking with that. For those of you that didn't know of his/her work before, you will likely know the people that followed in his footsteps: Kent Williams, George Pratt (SVA instructor and "Enemy Ace") and to some small effect Jon J Muth. It's my understanding that Jeff almost single-handedly reintroduced the Pre-Raphaelites to a generation (for better or worse.)
