Question; I am looking to play my first real D&D game at Recess. Would it be better for a noob such as myself to play the 4th edition or the "oldschool" one?

I think if you're going to learn D&D, you may as well learn the newest edition.

Seconded, for a variety of reasons. First off, opportunities to play more 4e in the future will be orders of magnitude more numerous than opportunities to play older editions, especially pre-3rd Ed. stuff. Second, it's much more newbie-friendly, and tighter-designed.

I disagree with Gaylord!
The best D&D orientation will be in the OD&D "Cherry Pie", which will probably be much more player-creativity driven (at least as Tavis runs it) than the later editions, and therefore better for the D&D gist. This is not to diss the 3.5 or 4E games, which I'll throw elbows to sign up for. But if you're wondering what all the D&D fuss is about, try the earliest version.

Since all the D&D GM's at recess are awesome you won't lose out no matter what you pick to play! You will learn the basics of either system. All of them are equally fun in their own way and one system isn't harder or easier to understand than the other. Go with your gut!

Quick question guys, are these supposed to be intro games or games for experienced players?

The reason I ask is because I'm a former 40k player who is looking to get into RPGs, specifically Dark Heresy or Rogue Trader.

Are you guys ok with a complete and total RGB noob coming and trying out a game? Or will that bother the experienced players who will have to slow down and explain everything to the new guy?

I believe most of the games require no experience! Recess is a pretty friendly event to people who have never gamed before (or played specific types of games).

I attended the last GGG with only having a teensy bit experience playing a sort of half assed backwards version of D&D when I was like...twelve. Everyone was really cool about it and I got the hang of it really fast. Everyone was really nice, and I've heard it time and time again that newbs like us are completely and utterly welcome with open arms!
