Daemons of Chaos army

Fighting huge battles with tiny men!

Postby boredoom on Fri Feb 25, 2011 2:49 pm

I just bought a mostly painted Daemons army for Warhammer Fantasy Battle, to provide some variety for my battles with gronti and Falgrim. We all have Good armies - this if the first really evil one, or as I will call it, misunderstood.

The models are Khorne and Tzeentch. The previous owner obviously went for the units that kick the most mortal butt on the battlefield. The "Bloodthirster" is a ginormous Balrog model from GW's Lord of the Ring game. Sorry, no pictures yet.

Daemons was the top-tier army in 7th Edition, capable of some combos that were nearly unbeatable. It's been nerfed a bit in 8th edition, but it's still a very powerful army, and I think I'll have to reign in my power-gaming instinct with this one. I can easily field 2000 points with some variety, and with some boosts to the Core troops, can go up to 3000 points.

I'm intrigued by the fact that Daemons is the only Fantasy army that can also be used in 40k, so I might try that some time. I imagine that having models with square bases wouldn't be a big problem in 40k.

A Lord of Change came unpainted, so I've hired our very talented Viper to paint that and a Khorne battle standard for the army. I also have unpainted Pink Horrors and Daemonettes, both late versions, that I'll be looking to sell, if anyone's interested.

I should add that I've already bought, separately, a unit of Nurgle Daemons. I also plan to buy at least one from Slaanesh so I can field a force with representation from all four Ruinous Powers.

I bought a batch some old-style "big hand" Pink Horrors, and these look a lot better than the new ones, so I'll be selling those, both the painted and unpainted.

Here's three generations of Pink Horrors. I have the middle "doing the wave with my big hands" kind and the new "I'm a walking squid, fear me" kind.

Unfortunately, my "big hand" horrors are poorly painted. That will be a challenge, but at least I can't make them worse than they are...

My 19 Bloodletters are nearly done! They just need basing. These are the first models I've really painted myself since I was a teenager, beyond a few touchups here and there, and bases. When I bought the Bloodletters, they had been primed, basecoated red and washed with black ink. I highlighted, drybrushed and added black, purple, white, green and bronze details. It was surprisingly easy and fun!

Most surprisingly, now that she's seen me paint, my wife has come around. She's been on the opinion that painting toy soldiers is beneath a grown man, but she thinks it looks pretty fun. That means the floodgates are open, and I've stripped the Pink Horrors I bought:

They had a terrible paint job (viper saw it first hand). I thought I could improve it by washing and highlighting, but stripping has revealed a lot of nice detail that was obscured, so I think it was the right thing to do. I used 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol from the drugstore.

I'm trying to decide whether to use white spray primer and basecoat pink or to use The Army Painter's flesh-colored spray primer. In either case, I'll then wash with red and highlight with light pink. A doozy!

Thanks for the photos! When I was over there on Friday, Theresa mentioned you wanted me to see the models, but the kids distracted us and I never got to see them. They look great!

Very awesome miniatures, cool paint jobs :). What armies are in your circle of gamers? Has everyone switched to 8th Edition? Where do you guys play? Hopefully that new Twenty Sided store will be a good place to get together. I'm still working on my High Elves and figuring out the rules. Got some really old plastic archers and spearmen put together to add to the group :).

It's mostly been gronti and I fighting it out in the Forest Hills-Rego Park area. Occasionally I've made the trip to Brooklyn to fight Falgrim.

I have a large Lizardman army, which I supplement with gronti's Lizardman contingent. Gronti has a large Dwarf army and some High Elf models that he combines with a borrowed army. He also has a borrowed Wood Elf army, which I have some extra models for. Falgrim has High Elves, Wood Elves and Brettonians.

So we have a lot of armies between us, but the Daemons are the first evil one.

Your daemons look great boredoom. I'd love to fight them. Oh how I miss battles. :(

Once I have free time again, in about a year, I'd be down. :p

Me too! Maybe even this summer, if I can borrow someone's minis.
