Looking for a game/minis transport bag

Fighting huge battles with tiny men!

Postby Pillar on Tue Sep 21, 2010 3:54 pm

I've seen quite a few bags and cases that are used to protect and transport minis and terrain, but never owned any. Does anyone have a favorite(s) that they strongly recommend?

Basically, I'm looking for something to condense boardgame and RPG material and minis into for easier transport.

Depends on the size of the minis.. I like the gun case. They're pretty cheap for the amount of minis they can carry. Like this one. The Strat has them, too - $25, next to the others from GW and the rest.

To be more specific, the only mini's I'd be considering are standard scale D&D minis, with perhaps a few larger ones like Gravestorm from Castle Ravenloft.

Then that'd work, I think.

If you were wanting to carry books and terrain too though, you might need something a bit bigger. I am satisfied with my transport from the Warstore. The inserts have removable foam cubes to create a custom fit.

I second the army transport recommendation, if you're seriously considering rocking a bag like this.. It is large enough to carry many boxes and flexible enough to load in foam trays if you're worried about minis. I use it to carry my Descent:JitD games to Recess and it works like a charm. I have the Mark2 which backloads (instead of top loads as in the picture BH provided). 2 Big boxes, 2 trays full of bits and all the instruction books I need. I don't know how folks carry Descent around other wise! I cram all the minis into a single box though as I don't care about them...they won't (normally) break as the plastic is soft, so instead they normally bend. I may have to eventually repair a skeleton or two, but I've owned the game for years and I can live with that.

Foam trays take up A LOT of space as well...something to consider in our world of tiny apartments and smaller closests. Each tray has footprint of like 14inches by 8 by ~2 inches(estimating), and for Castle Ravenloft you'd need several trays depending on how nice you'd want to pack the minis. I know that unless I actually painted the fuckers, I wouldn't bother with a tray just cause of the amount of space it would eat up!

I have a sabol army transport bag too, and I like it alot. I also considered one from a company called battlefoam - they're kind of the cadillac of miniature carrying bags. They do laser cut foam, and can do custom trays if you want. They're also more expensive than the sabol bags and I hear the owner is kind of a dick... so I went with the stuff at the warstore instead.

Yes, these were the bags I was thinking of. Is the WarStore the best place to order them, or are their better options?

Also, there are those clear plastic cases with multiple interior divisions. I've seen many of them used to store figs and bits for boardgames. Is there a recommended seller for those?

Warstore is the only place I know of. Sabol is the company that makes them, so you could google them. If the clear boxes are the type I am thinking of (slightly frosty white rather than truly transparent) you can get them at almost any local craft store. Michael's, etc.

I like the warstore for all my gaming needs (And savings). The Compleat strat has a few in inventory as well, so you can check there for it. For your purposes, the army transport mark 2 might be the way to go!

For the clear plastic trays, I picked up mine at a variety of places: Container Store, Wal-Mart, Michael's etc. Even hardware stores! You can usually find them in the nails/organization area OR if in a big place like Target or Wal-Mart, sometimes they'll have them in the Fish/Tackle (as they are often used as Fly sorters as well).

Scrapbooking sections might have some great organizers as well!
