The Twenty Sided Store - our new gaming store in Brooklyn !

Look at me! I'm productive! Tell us who you are!

Postby Alice on Thu Apr 29, 2010 8:42 am

Starting Friday May 7th 2010, myself (Alice) and Luis are opening the Twenty Sided Store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NYC. We are not a big company, we are just two gamers who wanted space to play in NYC and took it upon ourselves to make it happen. Because of that we are doing this as DIY as possible, and it will be bare bones for a while. Any help is really appreciated! We'll have retail, snacks, drinks, and tables for tabletop RPGs, minis, magic, board games, and more!

We'll be running Magic: The Gathering tournaments (we've been running events for 8 months now and I am an advanced TO and Luis is Core on his way to Advanced). We can run DCI sanctioned drafts on the fly (get those player reward cards!!), FNM, pre-releases, game days etc, board game nights, one-shot RPGs, and more. We will also have a library of games and RPG books available for people to use.

The address is:
Twenty Sided Store
84 Withers st, ground floor
Brooklyn, NY 11211

It's right at Meeker st (under the BQE, where there is lots of parking), between Meeker and Leonard St.
It's 7 blocks from the Bedford L, 4 blocks from the Metropolitan/Lorimer L/G, and 6 blocks from the Graham L. It's also 4 blocks from McCarren park.
our website is http://twentysidedstore.com/

Right now we are in the early stages of renovation and are getting together everything for the store on a really tight budget. We found a space in an excellent location with lots of room, it just needs a little love. I'll be posting updates every day about how we're coming along-- in just 9 short days we'll be open for business!

Image
This is the front entrance. We're going to hang a sign on the gate and repaint the wall with a mural of our store logo (a twenty sided die, of course!). The gate will stay open during business hours and I am going to get some flower planters to go out there as well. The gate door will stay open when we're open, so it'll look a little less imposing!

Image
This front area is going to be a dedicated RPG space/ hangout spot. I'd love to decorate it like a true nerd dungeon!

Image
The main space is in the middle of being cleared out. That whole area on the right is now knocked out and the door in the middle is no longer there.

Image
The main play space.

Image
Another view of the main space. The back wall has bricked up windows which at some point we will turn into actual windows again.

Image
And another view. You can see the bathroom and the shelving where we'll have our store counter. That whole room to the left has been knocked out.

The whole space is about 1300 square feet, and we estimate we can have about nine or so 8-person tables set up at all times in the main space, with another 4 or so that can be crammed in when needed, plus the front room which will have a 6 person table and some comfy seating.

In the next week or so, we'll be repainting, building tables and shelves and storage areas, finding chairs, painting the outside, and trying really hard to get the word out. We need as much help as we can get!

We'd love suggestions about events to run, promotions we can do, etc. We are also very happy to host events that people are already running. We'd love to have trivia, movie nights, board game tournaments, nerd speed dating, atari tournaments, magic chaos drafts, warhammer leagues, and anything and everything else! Please get in touch, my email is alice@twentysidedstore.com

We have also compiled a rather lengthy list of things we need for the space. If anyone knows where we can get them cheap, please let us know ASAP!
- tables (8', need 5-10, or need to build 5-10)
- folding/stacking chairs (need 60-100)
- a fridge or mini-fridge
- shelving/ bookshelves
- display cases
- a tv
- a projector
- cleaning supplies
- comfy living room type chairs (2-4)
- a coffee table
- t-shirts/ rags/ cloths for cleaning
- trash cans/ larger bins
- lamps (floor lamps/ hanging lamps)
- fans (the bigger the better)
- office supplies (stapler, folders, tape, binders, pens, whiteout, etc)
- artwork and frames
- a shopvac
- a carafe for coffee maker

There is also the afore-mentioned library. I would love to have a stack of RPG books and board games for people to use inside the space when they like. Any donations would be welcomed greatly. They can be a little well-loved, no problem.
I am also going to start some kind of cheap used science fiction and fantasy book section-- right now I'm thinking $2 books, or bring 2 and get one for free. Again, donations/ sales welcome!

Thanks so much, and I hope you are as excited about this as we are! I hope to hear from all of you about suggestions for the store, because we truly want this to be a community space!

Exciting!

I can't help on the material goods end of things, but if you need an extra pair of hands to help clean up and get things in order, I've got some of those (and perhaps a little more free time than I'd like).

We definitely appreciate help cleaning up. All this weekend I'll be in the space sweeping and mopping and painting and stuff, and will definitely use all the help I can get! Thank you so much!

And YES! Old RPGs and board games would be reallllllllly appreciated! We don't have much money to buy that stuff for retail right off the bat, but we want people to be able to play there, so that would help a LOT!

Thanks Frank! It actually looks better now than those photos, because some of it has been painted and that one room has been torn down, so the main play space is bigger than the photos show. It definitely has a lot of potential!

Alice,

This is all kinds of wonderful!!!

I think your shopping list can probably be taken care of with donations and a close eye on Craig's List.

Please let us know how progress goes, what your current (future) needs are, when you think you'll be up and running and how people will be able to take advantage of the space.

Best of luck on the venture. You're within a handful of blocks of some of my favorite restaurants and bars so it won't need much of a sell for me. You're also close to Desert Island, which is my most favorite comic book store.

Excellent. I look forward to many Magic tournaments and baked goods in the future.

I'm also in for tearing things down or building them up and carrying heavy objects.
