Attention Recess Participants and Volunteers

As you may know, the June Recess event was canceled so that we (the NerdNYC officers) could review NerdNYC event policies. As NerdNYC grows, our methods for organizing events need to change and grow as well. Periodically adjusting event policy helps ensure that NerdNYC events run more smoothly.

The NerdNYC officers researched all of our options and after much deliberation, we reached consensus about necessary changes. While most of these don’t impact NerdNYC members directly, the following changes affect all Recess attendees.

These will be in effect for the upcoming Recess and going forward until further notice.

THE FOLLOWING NEW RULES WILL BE IN EFFECT FOR THE NEXT RECESS ON SEPTEMBER 15TH, 2012

• Recess is now an adult-only event. Recess participants, volunteers and attendees must be at least 18 years of age or older, with no exceptions. Children will not be allowed into our event space for any reason.

•To help enforce the above rule, Recess participants and volunteers must bring valid photo ID with them to Recess, so that their age can be verified. People without valid ID will not be admitted to Recess. IDs will be checked at the door during registration.

Why these changes? We're a small non-profit and we take the safety of our event participants very seriously.

We realize that these rules changes may disappoint some, and for that we are sorry. These rules are necessary adjustments needed to protect and build NerdNYC, and will help us bring more high quality events to you in the future.

Too bad! I don't really bring my kids now, but I was looking forward to bringing them when they're a little older. I'm hoping the policy might be revisited at some point, given that most public events allow kids.

Yeah, total bummer. Kazu loved recess.

Indeed a shame. One of my favorite memories of Recess is the look of sheer joy on Kazu's face when he was playing Warhammer 40K(?) with Boredoom. Also, teaching him how to play Ticket To Ride.

Flojin - bring him to an afternoon board game night session!

So I take it this doesn't have directly to do with safety, since the kids aren't much at risk at Recess and don't add much to the overall danger level of the event. Is it a question of insurance or regulations of some kind?

Bummer... Li'l Zuk (9) is now playing most games and is starting to eliminate the AP.

Wondering if it would be possible to run some smaller but family-friendly game day at some point as compensation.

To my surprise I actually enjoyed having kids in my games, the few times I did.

This. At the last Recess I ran two sessions of Carcassonne/Ticket To Ride/Settlers to teach people euro games. I nearly bailed on the second session as I was ill. Then I looked at the table and saw two precocious 7 year olds and thought 'oh dear god no!'. But it turned out to be great fun.

This makes complete sense. Cause who the fuck wants kids at an event where we play games?

I'm not saying this actually happened, mind. But what if, and this is just if, what if I was ill and had my consciousness transferred into a cloned unit of myself. My mind would still have the experiences and maturity of my birth self, but my physical body would only be approximately two years old. Not that this happened necessarily, but would I or would I not meet the age requirements to attend?
