Recess needs your talented skills to run games for our Back to Old School Recess on September 11th, 2010, in our new Manhattan location.

Sign up to run 4 hours of games and you get into Recess for free. Run 4 hours, play 5 hours free!

If you are interested in running, please submit your game by posting the following information in this thread:

1. Your Forum name:
2. Game system:
3. Minimum and maximum players (4 is the default minimum not including yourself):
4. A descriptive paragraph about the game (your elevator pitch):
5. Rating: "anyone", "18+", or "mature"
6. Mood: "serious", "silly", or "dark"
7. Slot: "12-2pm", "2-4pm", "6:30-8:30pm", "8:30-10:30pm", or "Any"
8. Game Length: "2hrs" or "4hrs"

To make Recess as accessible as possible, make sure your games do not run longer than 4 hours, does not require previous experience, rules are taught as needed, and supports at least 4 players (not including yourself).

The Deadline for Submissions is Saturday, August 28th, 11:59pm.

When deciding what games to run, please keep in mind this Recess' OPTIONAL theme... Back to Old School: A crash course in 1980’s!

Want to save Castle Greyskull from the boney clutches of Skeletor with a 20-sided die, go screaming into the galactic core via that purple Star Frontiers box, or seek out Lovecraftian horrors in the Mystery Machine with a pocketful of Scooby snacks? Of course you fucking do, and so do we!

This special edition of Recess will feature a role-playing game selection in loving tribute to the best games/toys/cartoons of the 1980’s, in addition to all of your favorite 21st century boardgames, card games and RPGs. No matter if you were born into a world of 8-track cassettes or downloading MP3s, Recess: BtOS will get your gamer senses tingling like the first time you scored a critical hit.

You can run any game, modern or classic, or modern games with classic characters and themes (for example, He-Man using D&D 4E).

About running games at Recess:
Game submissions are first come first serve. And we reserve the right to decline submissions.

GMs and Game Refs should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to their game time to check in with the Recess staff and get their table assignment and player information.

Signups for games will occur at Recess on the day of the event. Currently we run sign-ups in two waves.

Would you like to run a game but you aren't sure what to run? Please take advantage of our Recess forum and start a thread to discuss your ideas and get feedback. Also, we've provided a Request thread where nerds can talk about games they'd love to play in! Maybe that'll spark some ideas? Check that out here... (coming soon).

The final schedule will be posted on the boards, about a week or so before Recess.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email us at recess@nerdnyc.com

In the Game Request thread, someone asked if volunteering to run a boardgame meant that they weren't allowed to play it. I'm reposting my answer here for others to reference:

Recess Coordinator wrote:If you volunteer to run a board game at Recess, you are volunteering to help the others at the table enjoy themselves. If your game generates enough interest to have all its player slots filled, it is considered good form to allow someone else to take the last player slot. This is done out of consideration that the others have paid for the privilege of playing the game (which they may have never had the opportunity to play before), whereas you are receiving an Recess admission discount to run the game. In this case, you act as a teacher of the rules and rules arbiter, as well as a strategy adviser for newer players. I do this all the time, and I find it as much fun as playing.

If your game still has empty player slots, you can of course act as a player -- especially if having another player will improve the game.

Finally, some games are arranged so that one person is in opposition to the others, like a conventional RPG and GM. Descent, with its Overlord role, is just one example of a boardgame with this arrangement. In this case, it may make more sense for the person who is running the game to take on this specialized role -- particularly if the rules governing it are complex or if having a veteran adversary will make the game more enjoyable for everyone.

1. Your Forum name: truegrit
2. Game system: BattleTech (possibly the Quick-Strike rules)
3. Min/max players: 4-12
4. Take the role of a 31st-century soldier and strap yourself into a 12 meter walking tank! It's robot-crunching robot fun using hex maps and minis. If we use the quick-strike rules, it will be a more abstract, but faster-paced game.
5. Rating: Anyone
6. Mood: Serious/Fun
7. Slot: Any
8. Game Length: 4 hrs

Edit: If the appropriate Quick-Strike rules come out in time, I will be incorporating Land-Air 'Mechs into the game. Because what's more 80s than transforming robots??
