Recess Relocation: Farewell to BRIC

NerdNYC's quarterly gaming event

Postby Pillar on Wed Jun 17, 2009 1:14 pm

Sadly, the last Recess NerdNYC hosts this year (November 21st) will be the last one we hold at BRIC Studios for a while.

BRIC Studios (and the building in which it resides) is about to undergo extensive renovations. These renovations (which, among other things, will extend the size of the BRIC space) are expected to take several (>20) months to complete.

While BRIC and its staff (particularly Frank's Sister!) have been absolutely great to us, these renovations necessitate that we find a new location for future Recesses while BRIC is remodeled.

The Recess committee still intends to have four Recess events a year, including the popular Thanksnerding event in November/December. And you can help us out!

If you know of a space that can be rented for a day which might be suitable for us, please send that information via PM to Pillar. Over this summer we will be scouting new locations, looking for a new Recess home.

Thanks!

King's Games might do it, but probably wouldn't let you charge.

Thanks for the tip! I don't think there is enough space at King's Games. But I do want to run some sort of event there in the future.

Not sure of the prices, but the Bohemian Hall (aka Astoria Beer Garden) has a huge basement-level hall, and two smaller ones. You can also rent the outside space, but I expect that is very pricey during any temperate time of year.
I don't mind being played as long as [Megan Fox] keeps saying stuff like "I'll get naked and do a robot to sell movie tickets" cause that's the kind of future I want to live in. -cawshis

Looks like they have 3 rooms. one fitting 250 people, one 50 people, one 30-40 people. We could rent the 2 smaller rooms. They have plenty of tables and chairs. I just emailed them for prices.

If we are thinking Astoria, my uncle is part of several greek clubs that have space that I can also look into.

Due to delays, we were able to book BRIC for November's Thanksnerding Recess event (November 21st), meaning that we won't be moving to another space as soon as we thought.

However, the officers are still scouting out places to hold events once BRIC goes offline. So, if you have information on a place that might do, send a PM to Pillar. Thanks to those who've already offered suggestions.

Again, here are the things we are looking for. We are flexible on some of these, but not so much on others:

- full day reservation available (roughly 10am-10pm or so)
- able to hold 60-90+ people
- near a train/subway station
- centrally located
- wheelchair access
- 12+ tables
- 70+ chairs
- cheap!
- friendly staff
