Trolling isn't lieing. Trolling is fishing for emotional responses.

jenskot wrote:Hi all, please post calmly and slowly. We don't want this thread to explode. Sharing opinions is totally cool, even if it is unpopular or contradictory.

General guideline is give everyone a chance to react. We don't want any single voice dominating the conversation. If you find yourself wanting to post repeatedly, take a break, give it a day, and then come back.

Thanks so much for your understanding.

Thus my statement that I'm not looking to start a flamewar, or I'll add even rehashing the prior thread. Your (NerdNYC the company) choice has been made, and I disagree with it. I'm not going to harangue you (the company officers) about it.

I've said my piece, and am not interested in defending myself or my statements. If anyone disagrees with me enough to want to post something, feel free to PM me instead of posting a reply here that likely won't be productive.

Thanks Stormsweeper.

Everyone, please take Stormsweeper's lead here. It's ok to disagree. The NerdNYC officers don't even like the change to Recess. We are also disappointed. This isn't something we want.

To summarize, it's totally ok not to agree and to feel dissapointed. Let's just do so respectfully and keep this thread from devolving into a flame war.

One thing about this board that's different from other boards is that we all know each other. Even when we disagree in a big way, we usually end up shaking each other's hands at a recess or gaming together. Most folks here know me, my name is Sean Sakamoto, I've got a wife and a kid and live in the lower east side. When I say I stand by my words, I usually mean that I would say them to you the next time we met if it came up.

I'm wondering, since you seem to be new to this board, if maybe you don't know any of us and so you don't mind just dropping in to tell us that you think we're all upset over nothing and mocking us because you're bored at work.

What's your name? Do you think we'll meet? If we did, I'd surely welcome you to the community and shake your hand. Would you tell me then that I'm all upset over nothing if I happen to be bummed that my kid can't be there any more?

Rules for this thread:

1. Don't post unless you've read: viewtopic.php?p=673079

2. Be nice. Don't be sarcastic. Don't make personal attacks. Post calmly and slowly. Don't dominate the conversation. If you post multiple times in this thread within 24 hours, take a break, give it a day, and then come back.

3. Be respectful and read charitably. As we've stated, if there is something we can't discuss, it's for the absolute best reasons. Don't make wild assumptions or speculations. Don't bait us into discussing things we've already stated we can't.

4. Don't question our intentions. If we say safety is an important priority, then it is.

5. Being nice doesn't mean agreeing with us. Please feel free to disagree with NerdNYC's decisions. Totally cool.

The more time we spend moderating threads like this, the less time and energy we have to improve Recess or find solutions to the existing challenges.

Thanks so much for your understanding.

Apreche, Flojin, please take a break. If you would like to continue this discussion please do so privately.

Just for the record, Apreche has been part of this community for 4 years and has been to numerous events and get-togethers. NerdNYC's frequent forum users actually make up a small percentage of the people who attend our in person events. I wouldn't make any assumptions of someone's newness to the community based on forum use. Not saying that is going on here. Just wanted to be clear since it's a common and understandable mistake.

Regarding liability insurance…

As already stated in NerdNYC - Then / Now / Forever, NerdNYC is already purchasing its own liability insurance.

We're also eating the cost of this insurance without raising the price of Recess. Same with the Friday night party we have yet to announce which will be free as a thank you to the community.

Spending a few minutes looking up online insurance quotes paints a false picture. Not all insurance is the same and you need to look at every piece of small print to determine when you are and are not covered. We've spent months talking to experts and insurance providers as well as looking at contracts.

Ultimately the cost of basic insurance is a small issue. The cost of plugging all the loopholes in those insurance policies of when they will and when they won't cover you is what is costly and time consuming. We go into detail of some of the recommended safety precautions in NerdNYC - Then / Now / Forever. The details depend on the space being rented and the specific insurance policy.

Additionally, liability is only part of the picture. Safety is also hugely important to us and we're willing to look into ways we can improve Recess beyond what insurance may or may not require us to do.

This all takes time. And we've already over extended ourselves. We will do our best.

Got it, my mistake. I clearly need a break from this thread. I don't like it when people tell me not to be upset when I am upset, it's like telling an agitated person to "calm down". But you, and Apreche are probably right. I'll go away for a while and calm down.

NerdNYC saved my life (probably)!

I'm sad I can't bring my little son to Recess. It must completely suck for the parents who've been bringing their kids and have to tell them that they can't go anymore - I feel terrible about that. I'm glad I won't have to tell my son that, it would break my heart.

But!

I'm glad it will be safer for the organizers and they won't have to bear undue responsibility for organizing huge events on their own time!

I'm a parent and I plan to continue coming to Recess (...somehow) even if it's kid free because I love Recess.

Yes, it sucks that it's a kid-free zone as I loved seeing the next generation of gamers running around, but it is totally and completely understandable, and I trust the officers to continue to work behind the scenes to see if there is a solution. And even if they can't find one, I won't be upset with them, because it's not their day job, no one is paying them to do this, in fact some of them are probably loosing consulting hours while working on Recess, if I'm not mistaken.

This change makes Recess less stressful and onerous for the organizers. I can't at any reasonable level be upset about that. I'd rather Recess happen in some form than not, with or without me (though I plan to continue coming to Recess ...somehow).
