Workout Suggestions - Or blogs, websites to read?

Soooo because of a trip later this year and other issues, today was my last session with my fitness guru. (We were both very sad--> :( ). At least until early next year when I gear up in earnest for my 50 mile walk in 2013.

I've been through bulgarian squats, plank-awesome and just about everything in between. But now I have to keep the momentum going alone.

My question is whether anyone knows of a storehouse of workout suggestions? Or could make some suggestions - regarding my continued drive to become the Hulk Jr? I've got a few beloved sources (Stumptuous - although she doesn't post anymore; Scooby the Fitness guy; and this Kettlebell woman who wants to bring everyone down to 8% body fat). I want to set up a routine for the next 12 weeks or so, that I can grow from. And a little variety thrown in (because otherwise I'll end up cheating). And I really want to continue to lift weights and work towards an unassisted pull-up :)

Suggestions?

Melissa

PS. I hate running. Just FYI.

I am really enjoying this app: https://www.zombiesrungame.com/

It gives you a reason to walk/run. I am no runner/walker but this is fun. THe supplies you "gather" as you travel are used to increase your base's power/resources/population, etc.

video!

I'd love some kind of no-brainer weights workout app. I don't want to think, just be pointed to stuff and told what to do.

And yes, Zombies, Run is hella fun.

There's a ton of programs out there and it really depends on what you want to prepare for. But if you're looking for motivation, try Fitocracy. A few of us are on there (NerdNYC group) and it acts like a fitness MMO. The more exercise you do, the more you level up. Good supportive community and it's a free site (at least for now).

Motivaton is not an issue :) I'm walking to cure MS (someday) after my sister was diagnosed earlier this year.

What I do need are set suggestions and activities. But I did some digging around and found a couple of sites with some example routines.

I highly recommend http://www.coachdos.com, http://www.menshealth.com/powertraining/, and his book on cardio strength training. My partner likes http://www.myomytv.com/, and I agree it has fantastic workouts.

http://www.tracysfoodandthought.blogspot.com is a great kettlebell resource.

What are your goals? Our trainer is back next month--you should join NYSC and start attending his classes. I can't speak well enough about him.

Sounds like you know a lot more than what I could add, but coincidentally I'm trying some life hack kinds of things that look like they might be good as a supplement to formal workouts. One is game standing up. Whenever I play xbox now, I don't sit in a chair. I can squat or stand or whatever. I find myself natually moving around and stretching as a result, and an hour of that > an hour of chair. I was surprised when I checked out activities like fly fishing on my fitness pal, how even just standing does more than you'd expect.

If you have Netflix, there are a ton of streaming videos from Crunch and 10 Minute Workouts that I've been using of late. Also, I'm a huge fan of the EA Active games as something to do in the apartment.

Outside Magazine, Men's and Women's Health both have really active websites, and all the race things I've been on usually have a workout of the day feature. There's a free magazine you can pick up on the street called Competitor, and they usually have some kind of workout in them. Just type things into Youtube and you'll get some great things too.

I'm collecting all these things on my own Tumblr as well, since I'm looking for the same reasons and such. Anything I'll find, I'll let you know.

Well, the ultimate goal is to be able to walk 50 miles in three days without dying. I've been doing some 10-13 mile walks and think I can work up to the 20/20/10 split, so I'm not that worried about it.

But in the meanwhile, now that I've started to get a real taste for muscles, I want to be stronger. I want to eventually benchpress Faust :). But in the interim I'd settle for a 5-minute plank (I can do just over a minute now, but I am shaky), an unassisted pull-up (or twenty) and the ability to do burpees without cursing.

The one quirk about my now former (::sob::) fitness guru was that she was always cautioning about my thighs getting "too big." But my theory is that if my thighs are solid muscle, I'd be the last to complain :). I would also like to get over my adversion to running and do a Tough Mudder or something. But for the moment, I just want to keep myself from cheating/boredom. And get really strong.

I did take your advice about the cardio - and cut back a lot. I have Friday swims (as time permits) and usually do about 20 minutes of elliptical to warm up before I do my workout in earnest. But no long cardio sessions.

Awesome, and good luck! I don't know what kind of footwear you use when training, but I imagine that strengthening your feet now with some kind of minimal shoe (e.g. Vibram FiveFingers, New Balance Minumus Zero, or even Chuck Taylors) will pay off down the road. Plus, they're all good for strength training.

I'm happy to see that strength training is working out for you already. Cursing burpees, however, never goes away.
