Cthulhu: The Wasted Land (ipad)

from Q*Bert to Gamecube.

Postby cawshis on Wed Feb 29, 2012 9:29 am

I couldn't find the thread this game was mentioned in, but it has been released! It's a grid-based tactical strategy RPG in a similiar vein to fallout (1 and 2) and final fantasy tactics. Control your intrepid WWI Brits through the horrors (literal horrors) of a WWI cthulhu/cult universe!

The game is pretty good (I've only played the tutorial and first few missions, I'll come back and post when I've completed the game). I have a lot of complaints about the UI, but on the balance, the options and strategy leave a lot of meaty-tactical choice (so far) and make up for the annoying bits.

The game includes lots of character customizing options and neat assortment of gear, so min/maxing is going to be fun. There is a stat for DEX and increasing it increases your Action points. Fuck yesssssss. Is that a shotgun stat? Yessssss....precioussssss......

It's amazing how the ipad is bringing back turn-based awesome!

Up to mission 3 (or 4), I forget. Sanity has come into play and the missions have gotten fairly challenging! It's good though the game requires one to have played these kinds of games before...lots of stuff goes untaught!

Couple of things I didn't realize (and the tutorial did NOT explain well):
1. Shields above heads means that the PC is in cover. A (/) sign means they can't be targeted with the weapon you have equipped.
2. There are 2 shooting options: Snap shot and Aimed Shot. Aimed shot has some sort of algorithm that will use leftover AP to increase accuracy. It's great, but really chews up the AP fast!
3. Saving xp points between missions is stupid. Spend them all to level up your guys to shoot/run/avoid gas better.
4. Speaking of, there are several skills that go up 33% per expense instead of 1%. They are not marked as such. Gas, First Aid, Psychoanalysis and I believe the Cthulhu Mythology skill are all 1/3rd increases.
5. Heavy Machine Guns will tear you up. Bring armor.

Lastly, though in my head I keep calling these goddamn German cultists "Nazis," that is grossly inaccurate. This takes place during WWI. Clearly I am a secret German hater who thinks that they are all Nazi cultists. I blame video games.

I really like it! Reminds me of Jagged Alliance, which reminded me of X-Com. My kingdom for a zoom button.

Warning for future players: experience is shared across characters, not per character. I accidentally spent all my XP on one character because I didn't realize this.

I did the same thing! The whole time, I was thinking "Gosh. My guys are going to be crazy after a few maps like this!"

Another warning: do not buy a Hotchkiss light machine gun for one of your characters after the first mission, thinking it will be more effective than a rifle. It does 1 or 2 points of damage, at least in unskilled hands. I got creamed in the second mission and had to restart the campaign.

I'm digging this, but it's less polished than Tactical Soldier: Undead Rising, also for the iPad.
