As discussed in the mega thread, there's a ton of new stuff coming in the next two updates, but our large world will not get most of it unless we push out even further. There was some talk of starting over, but instead I have proposed that the ops run out to a new faraway zone, and we make that the new spawn point, either by editing the map or simply connecting it to the old one and putting some beds there.
1.8 is supposed to hit tomorrow morning, so we could do this sometime next week. There's more changes in 1.9, but that does not yet have a release date. I'm guessing it will be at least a couple weeks, probably more like four. Do we want to restart with 1.8, or wait for 1.9?
The process as I see it:
- We hold off updating to 1.8 until ready
- I lock out non-ops
- Iskander does the drudge work of finding the new spawn area and doing and prep there (connecting it to the old area can be done later)
- I edit the map to move the spawn point, then move the players to that location
- I re-open the server to non-ops
Any comments or concerns on the restart?
As to hosting, I'm looking into some other options. The update may help out a great deal with the new lighting system, but if there is a resurgence of interest and the lag on the Amazon servers are too high, we could go for non-free hosting. I'm thinking I would collect $20 from whoever wants to contribute and see how far that takes us.
